The Town of Altavista celebrated the opening of the Spark Innovation Center in 2023, a collaboration between the town, Altavista on Track, the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission and various other partners. The center serves as an entrepreneurial coworking space, fostering innovation, creativity and skill development for local businesses and residents.
In 2021, the Commission awarded $183,306 in funding to support the project, covering engineering and architectural needs. This funding enabled the town to transform an underutilized fire station into a modern facility, which includes offices, coworking spaces, conference rooms, and a creative lab. The space offers entrepreneurs and small business owners an environment for collaboration and growth.
Since its opening, Spark has seen significant success. According to David Gillespie, director of planning and community development for the town of Altavista, the facility has maintained 100% occupancy for the private offices, with a growing waiting list of individuals eager to join. Additionally, Spark has developed a workshop curriculum for the makerspace programs and has already hosted various events and educational workshops for business start-ups.
The Spark Innovation Center’s impact extends beyond just office space. One of its primary goals has been workforce development. In January 2024, Spark launched the “Boost Your Business” program, offering workforce development training for business owners, employees and entrepreneurs.
“By prioritizing the professional development of our business community, Spark is fostering leadership and a capable workforce,” Gillespie said. “We equip businesses with insights into workforce retention strategies for developing a healthy workplace culture.
Since its opening, Spark has facilitated the creation of 12 direct jobs and numerous other local opportunities. Seven new businesses have opened in Altavista as a result of the center’s efforts.
“In just 18 months of operation, the Center has significantly surpassed our goals and expectations, receiving considerable support from the community,” Gillespie said. “The financial support from TRRC was instrumental in making this project possible, laying the foundation for the business hub it is today.”
